Serving For Mom

Serving For Mom

As many people know I lost my mother about a year and a half ago. For those that did not know my Mom she was a remarkable woman. She passed away from a rare kind of cancer, after a short fight. My mom's life was dedicated to serving others. From the scholarship board at Morgan High, to the Volleyball team, to helping every senior high school student who wanted to apply for college she would sit down and help them each individually, to serving in her church callings. Every where my Mom went she would strike up a conversation with anyone she came in contact with. She truly dedicated her life to serving. About 2 weeks ago the Morgan High School Volleyball team had a PINK night. This was started with help from my Mom 4 years ago to help raise money for Breast Cancer Research. After this night I was a little sad. I missed my Mom. We had a lot of memories together doing volleyball things.  I decided that I needed to be happy and get closer to my mom by serving. I have since made a personal goal to try and serve more. Whether it is striking up a conversation in the grocery store line or a big service. I just want to serve more. Tonight we were able to make pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and take them to some neighbors, even though this is a small act of service I hope that I made someone feel special.  Together as a family we were also able to raise over $600 to help someone close to use purchase a much needed headstone. And I have tried to always say hi or talk with people I come in contact with. From small acts to big acts I hope to keep myself accountable for my goal and post some of the acts of service on my blog. I really hope that I can continue to serve more. I miss my Mom so much, but I hope to get closer to her by serving. I also posted a few pictures of my cute girl. Girlfriend is getting so big and I do not like it.

Star Valley Half Marathon Recap

July 13 was the last half marathon that I was able to run. Seeing that I was a slacker and did not blog about it, I am now doing a recap. The Star Valley Half Marathon was just about 4 months after having my Brookers. So training did not go as well as I wanted it to, in fact the longest run I was able to do was only 6 miles before the race. It was really hard trying to train in about 2 months. I had to wait for the doctor to give the okay to run. It also was not the best idea to go on a 3 and a 1/2 hour horse ride the day before. I am not a horse rider, it was super fun, but unfortunately I did not get the stir ups right, and the last hour I ended up walking my horse because of the pain in my right knee.  So I new that the race was not going to be the best I have ever done.

I was lucky to be able to run the race with my cute sister-in-laws. Ethan was registered to run the race, but his knee was also having problems so he did not run. He was a great cheer leader for me, along with Brooklyn.  My overall time was 2:11 minutes, which is the SLOWEST I have ever done. I was kinda disappointed at first, but then after much contemplation I remember I just had a baby 4 months ago, with only 2 months of training, and my knee was not in good shape. In fact I basically walked the last 4 miles. So to walk four miles, and to end with a little over 10 minute miles is alright with me. I have been training a lot more for my SOJO half marathon that is coming up this SATURDAY!!! I am so worried that I will not get my goal of getting it under my goal of 1:59, but all I can do is try my best. I do not know how the race will go on Saturday, but I have trained and hopefully that training is enough.  I sure do love running half marathons! It is the perfect distance!

Brookers is 7 months

I can not even tell you how crazy it is to hear how old my little princess is. She is already 7 months old! It is so crazy to hear that. The time has flown by. Just a little update on what she is up to.
-Brooklyn has 2 little front teeth. I kind of feel bad that I did not know that her first tooth came through. We were sitting in church when I saw it, I did not even know she was teething. Girlfriend is always so happy it is hard to tell when things are not making her feel well.

-Brooklyn rolls all over the place. She has not started crawling yet, but she is starting to army crawl and I have a feeling that crawling is going to be in the near future.

-Brooklyn has always been a great sleeper, she currently sleeps about 11 hours every night and usually gets 2 naps in the day.

-Brooklyn is always hungry, but yet she is still under weight. When she was about 4 months our pediatrician had us start supplementing with extra formula because I was not producing enough for her. At that point she was in the 12th percentile for weight, since then we have her up to the 25th percentile and the pediatrician says she is doing just fine. She is also in the 95th percentile for height. Girlfriend is tall and skinny. She currently weighs 15 pounds and is about 28 inches long.

-Brooklyn loves being outside. Whether it is going running with me or just playing out side on the grass, she just loves the outside. Brooklyn is a very curious girl looking at anything and everything.

I am so lucky that I have such a good girl and that I get to spend so much time with her. I am in such a wonderful position where I get to spend the majority of my time with my little girl. Being a mother is the best thing in the world.
This last August my sister was so awesome and took our family pictures. I love my little family. We are so happy together and love our little Brooklyn Sherie. Everything about that little girl makes me so happy! Life is so amazing for us currently.

Our New Home

I am trying to play catch up on the blog. So here is the update on our home. This last May we found out that my brother Tom was getting married and they needed to move back into his condo in August. We had no intentions on buying a home, but we needed to move and the opportunity for us to buy a new home came along!
We started our journey of looking at homes in May. We looked at probably 50 homes and nothing stood out! Literally, 50 homes! We new we wanted to stay close to Ethan's school which is in Layton, but we also wanted a community that had young families that we could get to know. After a long day of looking at homes we had one left on the list. I was just ready to bag it and go home, but we stuck it out and everything about this home just made both Ethan and I feel so good!
The home is right on the edge of West Roy/West Haven. It is in a community of young families. The house is about 1700 square feet. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a family room with room for the office, and a play room (soon to be treadmill room) and a laundry room. The home is located on 0.25 acre lot with fencing so our little Lila can run and play. It was quite the process in getting the home, but we are so grateful we stuck it out and decided to buy this home. Our ward is AMAZING. Ethan is just 10 minutes from his job, I am 15 minutes from Mt. Ogden, and My other job which is a home health and hospice allows me to drive to my patients home. So the home is perfect. We are so blessed. I will post pictures when I am done decorating all the rooms.

SoJo Half Marathon Training

Yesterday I was able to do my last long run before my big half this next Saturday October 19. I was able to put in 10.5 miles, even though I wanted to do 12, I was happy with how the run went for the most part.  Ethan, Brooklyn, and I were down in Payson visiting the Fausetts so I really did not have to many running options. I just decided to go run, but I did not know how many HARD hills there were! My goodness, my body has NEVER been this sore. According to my Garmin I gain a total elevation of almost 850 feet in my run. I did just 9 miles out investigating Payson, then I needed to go to the bathroom so I went back to my sisters and  then finished with a 1.5 miles. My average pace was 9:06 per mile, a little slower than I wanted, but with the cold and the hills I am happy with my result. My goal for the half marathon is to get under my PR of 1:59 flat, I am hoping that I have trained enough to reach this goal. Only time will tell. I am excited to see how I can do, especially since I just started within this last month to increase my time.

The longest 9 days of my life!

As posted in the earlier post our little Brooklyn Sherie had a rough go. Once they found the blood culture they had to keep her in the NICU because she was on IV antibiotics, along with she was struggling to keep her oxygen up.

Wednesday March 6: While I was still in the hospital I was able to go see her every time they did "cluster care". Which is every 3-4 hours they take her vitals, change her diaper, and feed her. They like the babies to sleep uninterrupted as much as possible to get better. That was hard for me, because I just wanted to sit there and watch her all day long. At first, they had to give her formula, but luckily my milk came in and they allowed me to feed her. In the hospital Ethan and I went to all the feedings. (Except Ethan missed one cause he was sleeping, and wouldn't wake up. ;) ). We had amazing family that came in to give their support. Dad Wright, my sister Sara, Ethan's sister Ali, my brother Mark, and my Brother Mike and his girls all were able to come. Most of them did not see our angel, but they came and gave support to me which meant the world to me. Ethan and I were able to get a little sleep in between feedings and visitors.

Thursday March 7: They tried all day to wean our little girl off the oxygen, but her oxygen levels kept dropping, until the last try of the night. She was able to go without oxygen for the first time on Thursday night. We were very happy! Today was a boring day for me. Sitting around a hospital can get pretty boring! We were able to a surprise visit from Matt and Michelle from HONG KONG! Yes, they surprised us. They came for a week, because my family had a lot of big things that happened. But it was cool to see them walk in. Along with them, my sister Sara and Dede were able to come. I am so thankful for family! The nurses in the NICU were great at telling us everything that was going on. Unfourtunalty, the doctors were not as good of communicators as we would of liked. They did great at telling us what was going on, but kind of gave us false hope of when she could come home. So we would get our hopes up, and then when they told us she couldn't come home we would get very sad.

Friday March 8: One of the hardest days for both Ethan and I was the day that I was discharged. We were going home without our baby girl. The house was spotless, her nursey was all set up, all for when she came home. Walking into our house I just started to cry. What a hard thing to leave your baby girl. That night in between feedings Ethan and I were able to go celebrate my Grandpa and Grandma Porters 60th wedding anniversary down at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, with a special guest Jenny Oaks Baker. It was very theraputic to go down and celebrate with them. What an amazing couple they are, and I am so lucky they fell in love, or they would not of had my mom, who then would not of had me. They are 2 of the people I look up to the most, and try to shape my life around. We were lucky to celebrate with them. Still the same thing at the hospital with our girl. Still on Antibiotics, but was off her oxygen.

Saturday March 9: Nothing new with our girl, but we were able to have her meet her Grandma and Grandpa Wilford, and her aunts Amanda and Ali. Ethan's family was able to come down from Star Valley to see her. We had to take them one at a time into the NICU, but the nurses were very patient with us, and it meant a lot for them to see her.

Sunday March 10: Today was the one year anniversary of my mom's death. I suspected it would be hard. But there were a lot of tender mercies that came also. When we arrived at the hospital for the early morning feeding Brooklyn was in a lavender onsie (my mom's favorite color). We then were able to spend the day at my Dad's house inbetween feedings with all of my family. At the end of the night when we went to the last feeding, Brooklyn was in a nightgown that said "Grandma loves me". The nurses had no idea. I just started to cry again! (I was pretty emotional). Even though we thought we could take our angel home today, we were bless by the tender mercies that we received on this hard day.

Monday March 11: We went in this morning hoping to take our little girl home, but she had a bad night! Ethan and I were devastated, but grateful she was getting taken care of. In the middle of the night her oxygen levels dropped pretty low, and they would not go back up. So she was back on oxygen. And the doctors decided to keep her antibiotics going until Wednesday. I was having a hard time to, because Ethan went back to work. I was all alone at home. I ended up getting a suprise visit from the Fausett family which made my whole day!

Tuesday and Wednesday: Nothing new happened on Tuesday. Wednesday Brooklyn finished her antibiotics. The infection was gone. She still was having drops in her oxygen when they tried to wean her off of it. The doctor gave us a choice. To try and see how she does without oxygen, but if she dropped low enough they would have to keep her for at least more days, or to have a set day to take her home Friday with oxygen. After thinking about it we decided to take her home on oxygen for 2 reasons. Reason 1 being that I would not sleep if she did not have her oxygen, I would stay awake and make sure she was breathing, and Reason 2 is we had a for sure day that we could take her home. So we went with the second option and to bring her home on oxygen.

Thursday March 14: In order for us to take her home on oxygen the NICU requires parents to sleep at the hospital with Brooklyn all hooked up to her home equipment to make sure we know how to use it. So we were stuck at the hospital from 7 pm until we took her home. But we got to spend our first night with her! We also got to help with a bath for the first time for us. We were so excited. The night for Brooklyn went fine, she only woke up once, but for Ethan and I we did not get as much sleep. We did not hook her apnea monitor up right, so it kept going off. And everyone in the hospital could probably hear how loud the machine was. But we were just lucky we were able to take her home.

Friday March 15: WE FINALLY GET TO TAKE OUR GIRL HOME!!! After the doctor came in at about 10 am, we were able to go over discharge teaching and take our girl home. We were so excited!

We are so blessed to have our little girl home with us! We are also grateful for all the family and friends who dropped by, called us, and texted us. We are so grateful to have so many wonderful people in our lives!

I get to bring my girl home!

Welcome to the world

The story of our little princess, Brooklyn Sherie Wilford's, entrance into the world. On Tuesday March 6, 2012 we had it planned to go to Davis Hospital at 7 pm to help start the process of getting our little girl here. I was due on March 8, but the doctor gave me the option to be induced, and the 6th was the earliest day. I did not hesitate to get started, I was to the point where I needed to see my little girl, and I was getting VERY uncomfortable, and I was worried I was going to have a 9 lb baby. So Ethan and I went in. I do not think I have been so nervous in my life! Here is what went down....

8:00 pm: I was admitted and checked to see how dilated I was. I was dilated at my appointments, but then the nurses checked me and said I was not dilated at all. I was a little bummed. But the plan was to put a thing called Cervidil in me (a prostaglandin). Which is to basically "rippen" my cervix, so that they could start the oxytocin Wednesday morning before the doctor went to work. So the nurse started my very first IV.

8:50pm: The Cervidil was in. I had the option to get a sleeping pill and just wait the night out. At this time I decided no sleeping pill.

10:30pm: I was just so nervous about the labor, that I asked the nurse for an Ambien (a strong sleeping pill). I wanted to get a little rest before the big day tomorrow.

11:00pm: I started to get VERY uncomfortable. I started feeling crampy, and I did not think I was in labor. I tried walking, going to the bathroom, laying in bed. Nothing helped. It was the weirdest feeling.

11:50 pm: I had no idea why I was hurting so bad, I could not take it anymore. Was I a wus? THe nurse said that you might get a little crampy, but most people sleep ok. So since I was sooo stubborn and did not want to admit how much pain I was in, Ethan called the nurse in. She ended up checking me and I was dilated to a 5! I was in shock! The pain I was feeling was that I was in labor! The nurse was very suprised, seeing that I was not dilated at all before, and the stuff they gave me was not to induce labor. But it did. She asked about an epidural. I wanted to try it natural, but my contractions were coming every minute at this point. So we tried some morphine. She gave me 2 shots of morphine. It did nothing, in fact the contractions just kept getting stonger and closer. Keep in mind I had an Ambien just a little before this. I was kind of feeling a little loopy to.

12:30am: I finally decided that I could not do it, so I asked for an epidural. And I was even more loopy than before. I was loaded with a strong sleeping pill and morphine. Poor Ethan was a trooper with my loopiness, along with the nurse!

1:30am: The nurse anesthetist FINALLY came in. It felt like forever! And before he could do anything he had to ask me a million questions. To be completely honest the only thing I remember about my labor was the extreme pain I was in, and how quick the contractions were coming. Ethan, on the other hand said I was pretty funny. I do not do very good when I have a lot of drugs in me. I get very loopy.

2:00am: The epidural finally was in, it took about 20 min to start working, so by 2:20 I was a happy camper, I also was dilated to a 7.

3:00am: The nurse kind of worried me. She came in and put an oxygen mask on me. Apparently our little girl was in a little distress and was not getting the oxygen she needed to be receiving. This worried me a lot! So of course I was not able to sleep, either was Ethan cause I was so worried I kept him up. I was then dilated to a 9 at this point.

3:30am: I was dilated to a 10. The baby still needed extra oxygen, so the mask was still on, and the nurse went to get the doctor in.

4:00am: The doctor was in. The place was set up. And I started pushing. At this point I only had about 10 seconds in between contractions. So I pushed for just about 6 minutes then our beautiful girl was here!

4:06am: Our Brooklyn Sherie Wilford was here. She struggled when she came out. When Ethan cut the cord she was not breathing, and her heart beat was about 30 beats (which is very low for a baby), so they called in a bazillion people to do CPR on our girl. This was not the way I pictured her coming out. I wanted to hold her and hear her cry. I instantly started to cry when I saw that our little girl was struggling, while the nurse and Ethan were trying to calm me down. Luckily the nurse's and respirtory therapist were amazing, and after about a minute they got our little girl going. She did not ever cry, but she was breathing. Which was enough for me. They then took her to the NICU to get her fully assessed. I did not get to hold her for more than 1 second.

Once the took her. I started my recovery process. When the nurse transferred me from the labor and delivery to the postpartum care they let me stop in the NICU and hold my precious little angel. She was absolutely gorgeous. I did not get that much time with her. Ethan and I then went to my room and waited for word on our little girl. We called as much as we could to get updates on her. At about 9 am they told us that her oxygen dropped super low and that she turned blue so they put her on oxygen. They also took some blood cultures. Those took a little while to get processed at the lab, but when they finally were it turns out that Brooklyn had an infection in her blood. They still do not know where it came from, but it was a kind of strep that was in the blood. Luckily, it was easily treated with Antibiotics. So they started her on two different types, Gentamycin and Ampicillin. And we waited. It was not the way that I pictured our little girl would come into the world, but she is here. And we do not know what we would do without her. Both Ethan and I lover her so much! It is crazy, I feel even more in love with Ethan when I saw our precious little girl. What a crazy experience labor is. Hopefully the next time I am in labor it goes a little smother. :)

A New Year

2012 was a great year. It also was the hardest year of my life. I was lucky enough to marry my amazing husband at the end of 2011, so 2012 was our first year as a married couple! I love my Ethan James more than anything. We have grown together this year especially with a lot of hard times that happened.

Some big things that happened in 2012.....

Ethan finished his last semester at USU as an undergrad. He got a real grown up job at North Layton Junior High, and has loved teaching and coaching the boys basketball team. He will eventually go back to school to get his Master's but has to wait til he has his level 2 teaching to get the Master's that he wants. I am so proud of him and all his hard work. We also got to spend a lot of time together on Sundays as we taught the 8 year olds in primary. We just were released and Ethan was called to be the Young Men's 1st counselor. He is pretty excited and he will do great!!!

I started the year just working as an LPN at Washington Terrace Care and Rehab to help get Ethan through school and it actually turned into a blessing because I was able to spend a lot of time with my Mom on my days off.  In May I was accepted back into the Nursing Program. I continued to work and go to school Fall semester at Weber State, but actually ended up quitting my job a week ago in order to help with the pregnancy. I have one more semester til I get my RN. With only 5 credits this semester. Which also turns out to be a blessing. I am hoping and praying I can get through my precepting (internship for nurses) before the baby comes. After this semester I hopefully will be accepted to the BSN program at Weber which would only be 2  more semesters and I am going to find a job. Even though it has only been a week without work I am going CRAZY not working! But I know it was the right thing to do!

In July we found out we were expecting! Big news for us! It has turned out to be such a blessing and life changing thing! We are excited to be parents. She will be here shortly about 2 more months if all goes well!:)

On March 10 we lost my mom to a courageous fight with cancer. This year has been tough without her here. But I know she has helped us out in so many ways. She was my best friend. I am so grateful that from Nov til March I spent almost everyday with her on my off days at work helping her out and taking her to appointments. She taught me so much, expecially in that short amount of time. She was the best example to how I should be. She loved the Gospel and she loved everyone. She was so outgoing and positive. I was so blessed to have her at my wedding and I know she is up there with our little girl. Our little girl is a blessing that is going to be here at the one year anniversary of her death. I know my mom had a part in helping her get her. I have and always will love and miss my Mom!

As for 2013, I hope for a good year! We are excited to see what the future holds in our little family. We are very blessed!

30 Weeks

My AMAZING SISTER took some shots when I was visiting her! LOVE her lots!

I am beyond excited to meet our little Brooklyn Sherie! She is moving like crazy inside of me, which is a great sign. I love that she moves it reassures me that she is strong and alive!:)
I am currently craving cheese of any kind like queso and chips and cheese balls along with peanut butter! I can not get enough peanut butter! It was cute for Christmas my mother-in-law put peanut butter in my stocking. It's almost gone!
We are going in today for our doctors appointment which are going to start being every 2 weeks now. It is getting so close and both Ethan and I are so excited and also terrified to be parents. We are just about done getting everything we need. We just purchased our running stroller and car seat, the only other big thing we need is a crib, which we are working on. The rest is just diapers, wipes, and little things that we just don't know we need yet.
I am still able to run a few miles. Which is very nice. It takes a lot out, but since I am not working anymore it helps me feel like I am doing something good.
As for now that is all the pregnancy updates. We are so excited and ready for this new adventure in our lives! She has already brought so much joy in our lives!
